Midshipman

Midshipman is sampled from the handwriting of John M. Funck, Master’s Mate on the U.S.S. Constitution. He was in charge of keeping the frigate’s Watch and Quarter Bill from 1808 to 1810; a detailed list of all crew and their stations in sailing and during combat. This document, made avaible by The Internet Archive, was the primary source for this typeface.

Midshipman is a connected script that also includes initial forms for lowercase words. It also includes some archai features which come directly from the source material, including an initial ‘long s’ and the lack of distinction between Capitals ‘I’ and ‘J.’
